Whooping Crane Project

The LDWF received the necessary permits from the USFWS in order to reintroduce this magnificent bird to the last known area in LA that wintered the Whooping Crane. In order to be prepared for the expenses related to this program, private and corporate funds are being solicited by a team that has been working with the department to lay the groundwork for several years. The foundation has agreed to hold and administer the funds for the duration of the project. Since their arrival in February 2011, the cranes have since been allowed to range throughout southwest Louisiana to seek natural feeding areas.
